A quick one tonight as it’s been a long old day traveling between the north and London then back again. Plus, it’s something a little different.
I played through quite a bit of stuff this morning on the journey, the new Craft Spells album which is pretty cool, some twisted up indie funk from Jungle and then the new album from Canadian band Deep Dark Woods, Jubilee.
I have always been into alt country and it’s early originators, people like The Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds. And I am a big fan of The Deep Dark Woods, particularly their album The Place I Left Behind. Their stuff is steeped in old country, but in the middle of the album is today’s track Red, Red Rose which has got a lovely funk groove in the background and is a little bit swamp. A bit like The Band meets Tony Joe White. The production let’s you know it’s a modern track, otherwise you may struggle to pinpoint it’s age.
I have actually put up a live version which is fantastic and ups the funk element a bit more and brings the groove out a bit more. Great keys, guitar and Ryan Boldt has got an amazing voice. Very nice indeed.
