Robert Owens – Ordinary People (Fire Island Vocal Mix)
Owens should need almost no introduction, his soulful voice gracing many a big club hit, but bigger news for me on this track was the remix crew responsible for this version.
I was always a big fan of the Junior Boys Own output, and two big names within that scene were Farley & Heller. F&H were probably best known for the gargantuan Ultra flava on the Jus' Trax off shoot of JBO, but they also recorded a lot of material as Roach Motel and greatly admired soulful house shoot off Fire Island.
The track is really split into three parts. The opening stanza is quite straight ahead New Jersey Style vocal Deep house, centered around Owens Gospel-esq vocals and is very pleasant and worth a purchase on it’s own, but about 4.30 mins in they switch everything up and start building the melodies and chords behind his vocal, then around the six minutes mark Owens voice takes off and they dial things up on the track from catchy to euphoric with the introduction of some major key chords.
Back in 96 I heard this on some big systems, at clubs like the Ministry of Sound, and believe me it’s a very moving track, so set it running ramp up the volume, sit back close your eyes and drink it in.
I mentioned recently that I've been gradually adding my vinyl collection to discogs and ripping old tracks, what i've failed to mention i've also set up a youtube channel to which i'll be adding videos to use on the blog (it can be very difficult to find good youtube & soundcloud links), so please do check it out and if you want to keep up to date with the blog then feel free to add us on Facebook. We're reasonably low profile we seldom make more than one post a day, and it's always about music.
