One of our favourite artists around here is DJ Koze. His Amygdala LP was an essential purchase when it came out back in 2013, and the housey Nices Wölkchen was on my playlist or a number of months.
His DJ Kicks offering, number 50 in the series, came out earlier this month on K7 Records and again has got a lot of rotation in my headphones. It's a quite mesmeric mix, but it's the opening track Koze's own: "I Haven't Been Everywhere But It's On My List" that caught my attention again earlier this week.
DJ Koze has always had an ability to combine genres and I Haven't Been Everywhere is a great example of this. It's got it's obvious reference points, the choppy nature of the sample cuts instantly direct you to thoughts of Dilla, Madlib, Onra and other beatsmiths, but there is a cleanness and softness in Kozes production that really makes the track jump out from the norm.
Koze as an artist is an interesting guy, hailing from the Hamburg Hip Hop scene, Koze first made a name for himself as Koze on the mighty Kompact label, he's not the most prolific of producers but what he has produce demonstrates a man with a breadth of knowledge and an ability to meld genres together effortlessly and "I Haven't Been Everywhere" fits this to a tee.
As a track “I Haven’t Been Everywhere” is quite straight ahead, a soulful sample chopped and re-arranged, a soft kick and gentle sidestick on the 2 & 4 – it's all routine, but in among all that are endless little flourishes – things like the way the sample chopping changes up, the introduction of metallic pads low in the mix and an overpowering vocal sample. It all adds up and just delivers a wonderful ear worm. It's out now on K7, grab it.
