Danny Spiteri – Flute Knot

Didn’t have a commute today, but if I had, I would have been listening to the ep today’s track is from. We were kindly sent this to check out and I loved it immediately.

This is the first time I have come across Danny Spiteri’s work or Cridius, a collective of left-field electronic and hip hop musicians that he is part of. Hailing from San Jose, California, this is his second ep and it’s a beauty. To quote him, Crea Island, is an exploration of sample-based electronic aesthetics. And yes it is. It’s definitely experimental, using what sounds like field recordings amongst other things. There are no banging beats, nothing hits you in the face, but the more you listen to the lovely synths and melodies and intricate stutters and samples, the more it absorbs you into it.

The track I have gone for, Flute Knot, is a perfect example of this, a mix of beautiful found sounds, tropicalia samples and percussion. It gets in a groove and pulls you along.

This ep is really fresh stuff and you can get it via band camp for pay what you like. It’s well worth doing. I am off to check more of his and Cridius’ work.
